- 12-14 lasagna noodles You can use no-boil noodles too or gluten-free alternatives
- 1 lb ground beef or Italian sausage Feel free to swap with ground turkey or even a plant-based meat substitute
- 3 cups marinara sauce Store-bought is fine! Or you can use homemade if you're feeling fancy
- 2 cups ricotta cheese Cottage cheese works too if you want a lighter option
- 1 egg
- 3 cups shredded mozzarella cheese Swap with provolone or a dairy-free cheese if needed
- 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
- 1 tbsp Italian seasoning Or you can mix dried basil, oregano, and thyme
- Salt and pepper to taste
Preheat Your Oven: First, preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). This is where the magic begins!
Cook the Meat: In a large skillet, brown the ground beef or sausage over medium-high heat. Drain any excess fat. Stir in 2 cups of marinara sauce and let it simmer for about 5 minutes. This creates a flavorful meat sauce!
Mix the Ricotta: In another bowl, combine the ricotta cheese, egg, Italian seasoning, and a pinch of salt and pepper. This cheesy layer is going to be delightful!
Cook the Noodles: If you’re using traditional lasagna noodles, cook them according to the package instructions until they are al dente—about 8-10 minutes.
Layer It Up: Alright, let’s assemble! In a 9x13-inch baking dish, start with a thin layer of marinara sauce on the bottom. Next, a layer of noodles, followed by half of the ricotta mixture, a third of the meat sauce, and a cup of mozzarella. Repeat the layers, finishing with noodles on top. Spread the remaining marinara sauce over the noodles and sprinkle the last of the mozzarella and Parmesan on top.
Bake to Perfection: Cover your lasagna with foil (don’t let it touch the cheese!) and bake for 25 minutes. After that, remove the foil and bake for another 15-20 minutes until bubbling and golden brown. Your kitchen will smell heavenly!
Cool and Serve: Let the lasagna cool for about 10-15 minutes before slicing. This is crucial! Otherwise, you’ll end up with a gooey mess. But oh, is it worth the wait?!
